Post Production: Defringe

This might not be new to everybody, but I learnt it this year and its really made a difference to my post production.

This little trick is called defringing in Adobe Photoshop (Corel Photopaint also has this facility). What it does is remove (By default) 1 pixel around your 2D Billboard person, plant etc. It gives the layer a nice anti-aliased edge that blends the images into one another.

It is applied to the entire layer.

NB: I’ve noted that if you defringe alpha’d glass or something with lots of transparency, it gets a little messed up.

To do this is simple.

Select the Layer that needs a little ‘defringing’, click on Layer on the top menu, select Matting (at the bottom) and then Defringe - then OK.

I can’t find this option in Photoshop Elements 7.0 – does anybody know if its included?
