Review: Viz-people Casual Pack 3

Viz-People has released their latest people pack – Casual People V3 (and yes, we have it!) – This casual people pack does not fail to deliver on Viz Peoples track record. If the PDF catalogue isn’t enough to get you drooling, view the samples here.

There are 14 different people (men and woman, no children) each posed in walking, standing and sitting stances in casual, every day clothing. They’ve used posed, licensed (royalty free) studio models so there will not be an issue with content rights and copyright that you may face if you take your own images.

Viz-People has done some awesome work on the alpha blending on hair strands of the models. Edges are near perfect and would stand up to billboard sized scrutiny.

I don’t think the ambient shadow layer in each file is completely necessary though – in a rush, I copied and pasted a shadow instead of the person too many times (its selected by default in Photoshop) so I prefer using the PNGs which also come in the download pack.

The key to Casual People V3 is the ambient lighting, which is suitable to both indoor and outdoor 2D billboard placement without a strong, defined light source. Have they carved a niche in the industry by providing the highest resolution people packs that we’ve seen? I think so. It would even be nice to see group shots– people interacting, standing around in groups talking, drinking, shaking hands, etc.

This is not a cheap fix, at 90 Euros. It’s a sizable investment for your people library, but one you only need to make once, because I can assure you that you will reuse these images hundreds of times over.

Don’t be scared away by all the screens you have to click through when buying your pack from the Vizpeople website, you get there eventually.

The entire product is over 6 Gigs big so keep this in mind if you need to download these people quickly for a deadline. Maybe there should be a ‘half-resolution’ option (slightly compressed version) to download while you’re waiting for the big archive to download for those of us who need them urgently.

Then…

We need different races! There are no people of colour in this pack. This would be a MASSIVE PLUS for Viz-People to add to their product line up and, perhaps, Casual People V4.

All in all, the Casual People V3 graphics are unmatched in the 2D cutout market.
